I play Old Carolina every time I visit. It is remarkable to see how much improvement this course shows over time. It is a site to be seen today. An outstanding 9-holes that present a real challenge. The many hazards, wetlands, sands traps, and grass bunkers. Very friendly staff and and an awesome bar on site, a meal at The Pub is a must!
Nice course. Reasonable price. Quick round.Played Old Carolina's 9 holes on a cool Friday morning - the Friday after Thanksgiving. It was quite chilly at the start, which for me was 9AM. As such, I was the first one out, which made for a very quick round of golf.Old Carolina is a typical Hilton Head area layout - in a development, largely flat, and with pockets of water all over the place. There are some environmental wetlands areas that come into play. In fact, every hole had either water or wetlands to deal with. On most holes though, if you hit it straight, you can avoid the nasty stuff. My favorite hole here was #8, which requires a second shot over an environmental area. It plays, in my opinion, a bit harder than its course and slope rating suggest. One cool feature of this course was the presence of yellow tees, all of which make every hole less than 200 yards. The nine holes from the yellows measure just over 1100 yards (the course from the very back tees measures just over 3400 yards). A great way for beginners to learn how to play and a great way to speed up pace of play. The cost to play was very reasonable - only $19 for 9 holes and that included a cart.I was looking for a quick, reasonable 9 hole round on this Friday morning, and I found it. A recommended play if you are in the area.
Great restaurant on site, super friendly staff at the course. No practice facilities. Local rule on #1 is "hit 'em till you like one". Course is more difficult than it looks. Lots of undulation in the greens and most fairways have mounds on the edges if not in the fairway. Par 3's are where you can lose lots of strokes if you don't play them well.
