This club is totally overrated! For $45,000 initiation and $15,000 yearly it is best to belong someplace else. The bar prices are to much and the head pro is creepy. They had the Curtis Cup there a few years back. Does anyone know a name of a woman golfer! Most of its members are people that can't afford the town housing. Stay away.
What a treat to play this course! It's a spectacular Donald Ross gem in superb condition, and has been brought back to Ross's original vision over the past 6 years. ECC hosted The Curtis Club in 2010 and received rave reviews from the players. Essex also has beautiful grass tennis courts and a nice pool area. This is truly a family club, the members are very welcoming, and the staff - many of whom have been with the club for years, bend over backwards to be of service.
Excellent golf course. They have done wonders in the past decade to restore the course to the original design by Ross (thinning out growth that had encroached upon the course.)
Sunday July 31, 2011Had the pleasure of playing Essex County Club for my 2nd time. Had birdies on hole #8 and #18, so I consider it a good day. Donald Ross original home is on the 15th tee. Also, Bobby Jones stated that hole #7 was one of the best par 3's ever designed. The greens are in fabulous consition. The maintenance staff knows how to handle with care. The course just put in a new irrigation system, which is state of the art. The course is a links style course, and it's sister course is Myopia; however, I am impartial and I believe Essex is the better of the two; yet, maybe not harder. Do not let your guard down, or else the course will make you pay dearly. The Curtis Cup was held here a year ago in 2010, with the American's being victorious. I can't say enough about the course, and if you like tennis, there courts are something special. There's lawn, clay and paddle ball. I'm waiting for my next invite!
