I played this course today I feel like a better person for having done so! This is a private golf course and is not normally played by the likes of me so I was thankful to begin with. I get there and sign in at the clubhouse and the difference was apparent right away. The clubhouse attendant was happy that I was there eventhough he had never seen me there before and knew I was a guest of one of the employees there (read; not a big balla). They have free range balls and the distances are measured everday by someone with a distance finder so it's accurate to the day. The tee boxes are all level with no dirt patches. The fairways were lush and well kept. Lots of undulations. They even use a blower on the fairways to blow away all the debris, leaves, sticks, bird crap that accumulates thoughout the day. I freaking blower!! The bunkers were all well kept with beach soft sand and no little pebbles or rocks. Being that this course is in Florida and its the middle of summer the fact there were no brown burnt spots on any of the greens is just short of a water to wine mircale in and of itself.I didn't play my best today and was willing and ready to play another round just to be out there for a little longer. Add this course to your Jacksonville golf course bucket list if you are into that kind of thing.
Really nice course. Well maintained. Quick greens. Friendly people.I played Deerwood on an overcast and drizzly September Sunday afternoon. The course was in fine shape. The greens were smooth and true, and quick also. It took a few holes to get the feel for the greens. The fairways were in great shape.Deerwood has 5 sets of tees. The back tees measure 7200 yards and the reds measure about 5200 yards. The whites at about 6200 yards were fine for this 19 handicapper. Soon, Deerwood will be installing tee markers at about 100-200 yards from the green for the young ones who are just learning the game.Deerwood has plenty of water on the course, but much of it is off to the sides so there is always an option to avoid it if you hit it straight, so you should be able to retain most of your golf balls. There are a few dogleg, risk-reward holes that allow you to cut the corner over water if you so dare. The 10th hole in particular is a dogleg left, par 4 with the dogleg over water. A very interesting and fair course, and as I mentioned, it was in great shape.A highly recommended play if you can get on.
